Growth and success of financial services dependent on skills development
Date- 25/03/2008

A recent report carried out by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) has identified the skills requirement of the international services industry in Ireland and outlined areas to focus on, to ensure continued skills development, growth and success. The study is the result of extensive research and consultation and clearly identifies the skills required to support the continued development of the industry.

The report – Future Skills and Research Needs of the International Financial Services Industry – confirms Ireland’s place as an attractive location for investment by multinational firms in the international financial services. However, it also outlines a requirement for higher skills and a need for more training and improved methods for the development, delivery and implementation of training and education programmes.

Anne Heraty, Chairperson of the EGFSN, said that ‘By taking action now Ireland can ensure a continued flow of skilled people for the future international financial services companies, both multinational and indigenous, and enhance its reputation as a centre for high-value international financial services.’

The report highlights, as areas of concern, the following: skills needs; staff retention; research agenda; and delivery of education and training. It also gives suggested recommendations for ways to address these areas of concern. Such recommendations include an increase in the supply of highly skilled graduates; the development of a strategy for careers information and promotion; and a focus on improving course reviews and flexibility in course delivery.
